Dorchester

March 30, 2008

Dorchester is the County town of Dorset, its roots datin back to prehistoric times, with settlement around Maiden Castle, a significant Iron age hill-fort and a popular local attraction. The town is also made famous by its reference as the town of ‘Casterbridge’ in local author, Thomas Hardy’s book the ‘Major of Casterbridge’.

A drive or walk through Dorchester shows many fine architectural examples from a wide range of periods. The town even retains examples of original Roman features, with areas of the original town walls and foundations from a Roman House, near the County Hall.

The town, is sure to be an important feature in Dorset for many centuries to come, and any visit to Dorchester cannot be complete without a visit to nearby Poundbury, a modern development of buildings on Duchy of Cornwall (Prince of Wales) land.

A truly remarkable development of modern buidlings, that would’nt look out of place in the Georgian or Victoria era.

With good transport links Dorchester has 2 railway stations aswell as good road links to nearby Weymouth, Yeovil, Poole and Bournemouth.

The town has its own Football Club, Dorchester Town FC, who at the time of writing are just two divisions away from the football league.
