Gillingham
March 30, 2008
Gillingham, is probably the Milton Keynes of Dorset! The town has grown exponentially over the past 10 years, with a number of large housing developments in the town, sadly the infrastructure in terms of ameneties and services, is lagging a little behind.
One of the reasons that the town is so popular is due to the main-line railway station and its close proximity to the A303 and A350 which provides good transport links to the surrounding areas.
It was the railway that came to the town in 1850’s that is responsible for much of Gillingham’s traditional street scene, the arrival of the railway coincided with a boom of new indusrties in the town induding brickmaking, cheese, glove and soap manufacturers and many other associated industries. Much of the ‘old’ town is built using ‘Gillingham’ brick.
Gillingham’s growth during and after the second World War can again be attributed to the Railway line, during the war Gillingham was a popular destination for evacueesm, from London and other industrial towns.
