Swanage

Swanage is one of the frequently visited tourist spot, located in the south east of Dorset, England. Tourism is the main industry of the town and it was one of the largest producers of Purbeck stone and marble. Due to its tourism attraction, the city is termed as one of the towns in the UK to have named as ‘crater on Mars’.

It makes the ideal base for holidays by giving the wide range of attraction. Swanage is full of beaches, gardens, parks, museums, castles and innumerable entertaining destinies.

Swanage can take us back in history with its old castles like Corfe castle, Durlston castle and Lulworth castle. Corfe castle was built in the late 11th century. The castle stands strong with its steep slopes and thick walls displaying its impenetrable defensive role.

Swanage is well known for its sandy beaches stretching from South Haven point to the chalk cliffs of Handfast point. The naturist beach at Studland is a popular naturist beach approved from National trust. Swanage pier was built in late 1800’s. The old pier was used for accommodating the ships carrying Purbeck stones.

Swanage railway is the best way to experience the beautiful countryside while traveling through the town. The six mile trip runs through the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, passing through Corfe castle and hailing at Norden.

Durlston Country Park is the nature reserve of Swanage covering around 260 acres of land. The park is home to different species of birds, animals and reptiles. Bird watching and dolphins that swim in the seas are the major tourist attraction. It also includes attraction like visitors centre, the stone globe and Durlston castle. Visitor centre gives a wide range of information on the wildlife living in and around the park. The stone globe was erected by John Mowlems Greenwich works near the Durlston castle. The stone sphere is 10 feet in diameter and weighs 40 tons. Durlston castle is another piece of English architecture, which is built completely from local stone.

Swanage is also famous for their festivals which are celebrated throughout the year. Swanage folk festival, blues festival, jazz festivals are some of the major festivals of the town. The city comes alive during the month of the august when the carnival comes to town. The event starts with a large firework display followed by the procession of decorated floats and bands.

Tithe barn museum and heritage centre offers displays and films to introduce the fascinating history of Swanage from the quarrying village to the current popular tourist resort. Langton Matravers Museum has a large collection of evolution of local stone industry. The museum contains old pictures, tools and photographs, worked stone and fossils of ancient town. Putlake adventure farm visit is a great treat for family.

The place is full of different breeds of cows, horses, pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, turkeys and ducks. A visit to this place is a great experience of knowing the local domestic animals. Swanage thus provides a complete satisfying package for every tourist visiting the town.
