Verwood

Verwood is on the edge of the boundary of the counties of Dorset and Hampshire. It is similar to the New Forest. The distance between Verwood and London is 88 miles. Some of the nearby places are Breamore, Chalbury, Godshill, Hurn, Longham, Sopley and Winton. Verwood has poor agricultural land.
Till the 1950s, it was a tiny and spread settlement on the heathlands. In 1996, it had a population of 11,000 and its own council and mayor. It is the singular Dorset parish that is on a heathland. The local clay could be used for preparing brick, tiles and pottery. The raw materials for brooms, thatching spars and hurdles could be obtained through the woodlands.
Tourist Attractions
The Verwood Historical Society had its inception in 1978. It arranges meetings in the autumn, winter and spring months at St. Michael’s Parish Center. This society has a large collection of prints, slides of Verwood’s scenes. A slide show called “Heathland Heritage” has been created and can be displayed to local organizations. The society boasts of a mammoth collection of Verwood pottery that has been purchased or taken in donations. Several artifacts like bricks, books pertaining to Verwood have been stored. Census records of the parish from 1841 to 1901 have been maintained. The society arranges many exhibitions throughout the year.
The Verwood Heathland Heritage Center can be found between Ringwood and Cranborne on the opposite side of Verwood Memorial Hall and Recreation Ground. This center has preserved a unique primitive country pottery workshop. The Coffee Shop and the Gift Shop provides soft drinks, cakes, filter coffee, tea, hot chocolate and biscuits at a reasonable price. Angels and Saints – the Verwood and Three Legged Cross parish has two churches – St. Michael and All Angels in Verwood and All Saints in Three Legged Cross.
The first church of the former as constructed in 1829. In 1980-81, the Meeting Room was built to cater to the increasing population of Verwood. There are two guest houses in Verwood. One is the Bramble Lodge B & B. This is situated on Ringwood Road. The second is the Farleigh and is on Dewlands Road. Tennyson Cottage is a bed and breakfast hotel located at the center of Verwood. There is a lot of road parking.
Sports and Entertainment
The Crane Valley Golf Club is found in Verwood. The different facilities provided here are Club Bar, Tea and Coffee, Bar Snacks, Dinner, Lunch, Motor Trolley Hire, Club Hire, Pro Shop, Changing Rooms, Hotel, Driving Range, Trolley Hire and Buggy Hire. This is a championship standard course in mature woodland. The short 6th lies in a bend on the River Crane. Four authentic long par 5s, from 499 yards to 545 yards are situated. The Verwood Town Football Club is located at Potterne Park in Verwood.
The team plays in the Bournemouth Division Two and Sydehams League (Wessex) Division One. The Verwood Concert Brass is located nearly 10 miles to the north of Bournemouth. They are a brass band and are based in Dorset. This band performs at the Verwood Carnival and Rustic Fayre, Rembrance Sunday March and the concerts at the Memorial Hall. It also participates in bandstands, church concerts and summer fetes.
