Weymouth

Weymouth is a town in Dorset located at the mouth of River Wey on the English Channel coast. Weymouth is eight miles south of Dorchester and five miles north of Isle of Portland. This place is a famous tourist attraction because of the beaches found in Weymouth Bay. Aside from beaches, there are also other tourist attractions that you can find in Weymouth.

Beaches are one of the famous tourist attractions that tourists will look for once they visit a place. In Weymouth, you will find their golden sand beach called Weymouth Beach. This is a famous place for sea bathing, beach motocross and volleyball. Volleyball is a common sport in this beach. As a matter of fact, International Volleyball Championships regularly use this beach for competitions. Aside from volleyball competitions, this beach also plays host to Beach Kite festival. This place is proven safe and great for family outings beacause of their facilities such as first aid post, lost children center and inshore lifeguard. Aside from having fun at the beach, there are other activities that you can witness during your fun at the sun like Punch and Judy shows.

A famous tidal lagoon can be seen in Weymouth called The Fleet. This place can be found at the Chesil beach. It is considered to be the largest tidal lagoon in Britain. This place is a home of many wading birds. Aside from birds, there are fossils that you could see in the sand. This place is considered to be a Site of Special Scientific Interest that’s why it has been voted as the third best view in Britain on Country Life magazine.

Museums are also a common tourist destination in Weymouth. Located beside Weymouth harbor is a museum called Nothe Fort. This place was built in 1860 to protect Portland’s harbor. This place contains a rich historical background as it played an important role during World War II. The British and American navies used this place as a base. During the year 1956, this place was abandoned but purchased by a local council during 1961. Nowadays, this historical place plays as home of World War II vehicles, guns and canons.

A place to watch out for is the Weymouth Pavilion. This place was previously known as the Ritz and to be redeveloped in time for the 2012 Olympic games. This place was opened in 1908 but was destroyed by fire in 1954. After six years, a new one was built. This place was built on a peninsula land and reclaimed from the sea. After redeveloping this 10-acre spot, expect a lot of changes to emerge. There will be a new theater, ferry terminal and four-star hotel after the redeveloping has been completed.
Another place that you could consider to visit while having your vacation in Weymouth is the Deep Sea Adventure. This place is a converted Victorian Grain Warehouse that provides animated videos that tells a story about underwater marine investigations. Aside from watching videos, there are workshops that you will enjoy. This place is perfect for a family oriented activity.
